AY TOKPA TITOΣ KAIΣAP ΣΕΒΑΣ ΥΙΟΣ, laureate head right; c/m: MTHB monogram / ΕΠΙ M MAIKIOY ΡΟΥΦΟΥ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΟΥ, palm tree; cuirass to left, shields and spears to right. SNG von Aulock 6910; Waddington, Recueil, pg. 237, 16; Howgego 622 (for countermark). Near VF, tan patina, light porosity. ($750) One of the rarer types relating to the defeat of the Jewish insurgents. The proconsul of Bithynia, Maecius Rufus, evidently felt it politic to associate himself with the event through this issue, which had the added benefit of delivering a precautionary message to any would-be insurgents in his own territory. |  |
